The North Carolina Central University Department of Music is pleased to invite jazz lovers from around the Triangle to the Fall 2009 Jazz Combos Concert, Tuesday, November 3, 2009, at 7 p.m., in the B.N. Duke Auditorium. The concert will feature performances by student instrumentalists and vocalists and it is free and open to the public.

“People can expect some fantastic improvisation and performances by our top student performers,” said Baron Tymas, assistant director of Jazz Studies. “Our best jazz vocalists will be on hand to make sure this’ll be a great evening of music and it’s free to the public.”

North Carolina Central University’s Department of Public Administration and the Public Allies of North Carolina have partnered to host a Legacy Day on Friday, November 6, 2009. George Curry, journalist, keynote speaker, moderator and media coach, will speak at the Phi Alpha Alpha Honor Society Induction and Public Service Award Ceremony at 1 p.m. in the W.G. Pearson Cafeteria Banquet Hall on Lawson Street.

According to Curry’s website <http://www.georgecurry.com/bio>:

From 2001 until 2007, Curry served as editor-in-chief of the National Newspaper Publishers Association News Service in Washington, D.C. He was editor-in-chief of Emerge magazine for seven years and is a former president of the American Society of Magazine Editors, where he became the first African-American to hold the association's top office.

Under Curry's leadership, Emerge won more than 40 national journalism awards. In May 1996, Emerge published a cover story titled Kemba's Nightmare. This story culminated in the release of Kemba Smith, a 22-year-old woman who was given a mandatory sentence of more than 24 years in prison for her minor role in a drug ring. President Clinton pardoned Smith in December 2000, marking the end of the nightmare.

While working as a Washington correspondent for the Chicago Tribune, Curry wrote and served as chief correspondent for the widely praised television documentary, "Assault on Affirmative Action," which was aired as part of the "Frontline" series on PBS. He was featured in a segment of "One Plus One," a national PBS documentary on mentoring. He was part of the weeklong Nightline special, "America in Black and White," and appeared on the CBS Evening News, ABC’s World News Tonight, The Today Show, 20/20, Good Morning America, CNN, C-SPAN, BET, Fox Network News, MSNBC and ESPN. In 2003, The National Association of Black Journalists named Curry "Journalist of the Year.”

Curry will sign books following the ceremony at 2:30 p.m. in the Whiting Criminal Justice Building on the corner of Lincoln and Nelson Streets. This event is free and open to the public.

The North Carolina Central University School of Library and Information Sciences will host a talk by American Library Association (ALA) President Camila Alire. The presentation is scheduled for Tuesday, November 10, 2009, at 6:30 p.m., in the H.M. Michaux, Jr. School of Education Building auditorium on the corner of Lincoln and Cecil Streets.

In an address titled “Whose Job Is It Anyway?: Library Advocacy From the Frontlines,” Alire will focus on her role in expanding library access for all people. A reception will follow the presentation.

Alire’s address marks the third consecutive year NCCU’s School of Library and Information Sciences has had the honor of hosting the current or incoming ALA president. “Certainly the ability of the NCCU-SLIS to attract and sponsor ALA presidents are all signal events in the life of the school but also in the life of the university and the profession, said Dean Irene Owens. “Moreover, these events raise the visibility of our program and provide added value to our faculty, staff, students and alumni.”

Alire is the first Hispanic person to serve as ALA president. She is active in REFORMA, a national association to promote library and information services to Latinos and the Spanish speaking, having served as national president and chair of several committees. She co-authored a book, Serving Latino Communities (2007) and is a strong advocate for recruiting and retaining minorities in the library profession. Hispanic magazine named Alire as one of the 100 most influential Hispanics in the United States.

Along with her advocacy and outstanding record of service, Alire is involved in the field of disaster recovery for libraries, editing the volume Library Disaster Planning and Recovery Handbook (2000). She is Dean Emerita at the University of New Mexico and Colorado State University, and is currently serving as professor of practice in Simmons College’s Ph.D. program. She has served as a community college library director, head of a special library, and a K-12 school librarian.

Founded in 1939, NCCU’s School of Library and Information Sciences is a foremost advocate in the field of promoting diversity in librarianship. With an enrollment of 356 graduate students, both on-campus and distance learning, the program is one of the most diverse of its kind in the United States.

The Fifth African-American Literature Symposium, “It’s A New Day: The Vicissitude of African American Autobiography from Briton Hammon to President Barack Obama,” is a symposium is sponsored by the Department of English and Mass Communication and the NCCU Lyceum Series.

This year’s keynote speaker is Dr. Mark Anthony Neal, professor of African-American Studies at Duke University. His keynote address, “A (Nearly) Flawless Masculinity: Barack Obama’s Performance of Cosmopolitan Blackness,” will begin at 10:45 a.m. Dr. Neal is a renowned scholar whose works include Soul Babies: Black Popular Culture and the Post-Soul Aesthetic (2002) and New Black Man (2005). He has appeared on National Public Radio and in the Los Angeles Times.

Additionally, panelists from universities such as Hampton University, University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, University of Maryland at Eastern Shore, and University of North Carolina at Wilmington will give paper presentations throughout the day.

The event speaker will be Akinyi June Arunga, a law school graduate of the University of Buckingham. An advocate of freer markets and international trade, Arunga was named one of the "100 Most Creative People in Business" by Fast Company magazine, and is the founder of Open Quest Media LLC, a New York-based film production company. Before founding Open Quest, she was an independent film writer and producer in the United Kingdom. She has written and produced four documentaries, including The Devil’s Footpath, based on her 5,000-mile trip through Africa in 2003.
